What is the ideal temperature for the house?

Published by Kostas Lazaridis on

In a previous article, we discussed what the ideal food storage temperatures are!

Today we will talk about the ideal temperature for our home, which is one of the main questions that concern us both in winter and summer.

What is the ideal air conditioning temperature in winter and what in summer?

What is the ideal temperature for children, and what for pets?

All of the above and more will be answered in this article!

What is the ideal room temperature in the summer?

For the sake of convenience and objectivity, factors such as geographical location, climate, and personal preferences will be excluded from the article.

In the summer months, the high ambient temperatures make our indoor comfort necessary and clearly more difficult.

According to the U.S. Department of Energy, in order to achieve maximum energy savings and at the same time have favorable indoor conditions, we should aim for 24-25 degrees Celsius.

However, for our most comfortable living, a temperature of 20-22 degrees seems to be preferable.

What is the ideal room temperature in winter?

During the winter months, an ideal value to give our environment a warm, but not uncomfortable, atmosphere is between 20 and 23 degrees Celsius.

In this range, we achieve both comfort and energy-saving as our thermostat will not take long to reach the necessary temperature and cut off the heating.

Ideal sleeping conditions

You may be thinking that the ideal temperature during sleep should be the same as it has been all day.

This, however, is a common misconception. Optimal sleep temperatures are generally lower than those observed during the day.

This is because, during sleep, our body lowers its temperature by a few degrees.

Consequently, the ambient temperature must also drop accordingly, so that there is not a large temperature difference between them.

The temperature during sleep, therefore, has a direct impact on the quality of sleep and, by extension, on the quality of life. Insomnia has also been linked to temperature fluctuations in the bedroom. It is therefore recommended that a comfortable room temperature is maintained at night.

It is generally accepted that lower temperatures allow you to have a deep, healing sleep.

For optimal results, 17 to 20 degrees Celsius seems to be the recommended bedroom temperature for most people.

Temperatures suitable for pets

As with humans, pets need specific temperatures for optimal living.

An indicative range of values is that of 24-26 degrees Celsius during the summer months, while for the winter months, this is 20-22 degrees Celsius.

Temperatures suitable for children

Children are particularly sensitive to temperature changes. It is, therefore, necessary to maintain a constant temperature of 20-22 degrees Celsius in the room so that the child feels comfortable and is not at risk of contracting viruses.
